Voices of the Void, or VotV for short, is MrDrNose's most recent game.

Overview

Voices of the void was inspired by Signal Simulator, and most likely born out of a dream for more content from the game's concept, as well as the fact that the original game has now been completed.

Itch.io Description

You work as a scientist in the isolated research lab in the mountains of Switzerland. Your task is to gather signals from space, analyze them, process them and sell them to get points.

You can get regular signals and objects like dwarf planets and stars, or you can get something "unusual" or "strange"

The game has 40+ days and events, 150+ possible signals, and some easter eggs and secrets.

Tip: for more immersion disable music in audio settings.

Plot

Not much is known about the story currently, but what is known is that it takes place in the same universe as Advanced Education with Viktor Strobovski, and that the Ariral species is to play a big part.

Basic Premise

You play as Dr. Kel, a recent hire for an unknown research company, processing signals from space from the comfort of your concrete base in the middle of a forest. Your main job is maintaining the satellites around the area, and finding interesting things with the panels in the middle of your base. There are also many secrets hidden around the map, such as Argemia plushies.

Gameplay

Your job in the game is simple. Locate and process signals, filter them, and send them to your supervisors. You may be requested to provide certain types of drives; these requests will be found in the emails tab on your computer each day. On the same email will be a request for certain satellites' hash codes, which you must send with your drives. If any satellites break, it's your job to travel to them and repair the servers located in them.

Game Over

SPOILER WARNING

Death (Game Over) is an extremely rare and seemingly random event in Voices of the Void. However, it occurs after “The end is near” signal.

After receiving this signal, if the player decides to continue playing the save in which the signal is encountered, the player will be trapped in a loop, dying over and over again. The player will always be loaded in to their save shortly after fully processing (Level 3) the "End Is Near"/red skull signal.

When death occurs, the screen will gain a bright-red tint and a loud ‘radio static’ sound will be heard for a split-second. Afterwards, the screen will turn black and the “Game Over" screen will be displayed.

The only way to prevent the "Game Over" event from occurring is to erase the drive that stores the End Is Near signal's data using the drive eraser located near the power control panel in the Base. This process is alluded to in an email received by the player shortly after fully processing the signal.

The “Game Over” appears to be a text entry displayed on a server terminal screen similar to the ones used by the player for operating and maintaining the satellite dishes but with the font color being cyan instead of white. The text entry reads:

File:Death Message.png

>BEGIN

SUBJECT: DR_KEL

STATUS: TERMINATED

LOCATION: EARTH

STATUS: CONVERTED

CONCLUSION: CANCEL MISSION, RETURN BACK HOME, RETRIEVE RESOURCES, FOLLOW THE OBJECT

>END

[GAME OVER] [GAME OVER]

Other things such as Rufus or Bad Sun can also cause a death/Game over screen

Trivia

  • SCP-432 is featured in this game, although this time it doesn't lead to a maze.
  • Many aspects of the game's style are derived from the video game Half-Life 2, and its engine Source. Most notably, the majority of the sound effects in the game are from Half-Life 2. Other subtle references include the appearance of the Crowbar, the 'sv' prefix for commands typed into consoles, and a "Node Graph out of Date. Rebuilding..." message that appears when loading into a level.
